The bluing can also rub off of certain parts of the gun to expose the raw steel. Practically speaking, I still think it's a wash.

I'd recommend leaving it alone as S&W isn't responsible for keeping pistols cleaned and oiled properly and refinishing would likely be a wash with changing pistols.
